Community is important. Human Interaction is important. Events are important. Providing a place/platform/opportunity for people to come together and be their true authentic self among other people being their true authentic self, is important. It's under these principles that I started running events back in 2018. Not only because I was looking for a place/space to be myself, but because I believed that if I needed that, other people probably did too. On some “if you build it, they will come” type vibes. Create your own community. No fakeness, all reality. And give people a place to be free, get inspired, and give themselves permission to just be who they are.
I believe strongly in the idea of multidisciplinary shows. aCreators'Collection was founded under the idea of Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary shows. The idea that we're all trying to convey and express the same ideas but just in our own unique ways. And that the combination of multiple art forms coming together can better explain and portray that idea. That bigger and more complex ideas, take a further nuancing of those ideas. And that different art forms coming together can better explain bigger and more complex ideas. It's about the Curation of an Idea. And that's why with any event I put on, I try and incorporate as many art forms (and different expressions/genres within that art form) as possible.
If I'm being honest, “Paint and Jams” are probably my favorite events to put on. A true multidisciplinary community event and hang. The possibilities are endless. True Creation happening in real time. Music affecting the Art; Art affecting the Music. A direct visual (yet abstract) representation of what was happening during that time. Like a vinyl record being made, but instead, it's a beautiful art piece.
I started running “Paint and Jams” back in early 2021, back when I was hosting jams out of my basement in Harlem, and my visual artist friend (who didn't play any instruments) pulled up to the jam. I then asked him “I got a big roll of paper and some markers, do you wanna draw?”; 4hrs and 17ft of paper later, I was blown away with what had happened. I was obsessed. And whether it's just one artist painting the scene, or a whole crew of people making little additions to a whole community piece, Paint and Jams are just simply amazing, and a staple in the type of programming I run and believe in.
